UNTOLD TRUTH

THE STORY

Learn about Czechoslovak resistance stories and acts of bravery through the eyes of a local enthusiast who is passionate about discovering off-the-beaten paths and the heroic stories of both well-known and unsung heroes of World War II. These individuals made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today. The tour transports you back to 1941, when Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš were dropped off in Nehvizdy on a dangerous mission: to assassinate SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, also known as the Butcher of Prague, the architect of concentration camps, or the Blonde Beast. Many brave young Czechoslovak soldiers left their homeland after the Munich betrayal in 1938. After fighting in France and witnessing its fall, they headed to the United Kingdom, where Czechoslovak President Eduard Beneš had established an exile government. His primary goal was to reestablish Czechoslovakia within its pre-war borders and secure the future of the nation.

THE RESISTANCE EFFORT

Local resistance efforts were crucial in showing the Allies that Czechoslovakia had not surrendered to the Nazi regime. Unlike many other operations, the team behind Operation Anthropoid was fortunate enough to meet the right people, receiving the help they needed to execute their mission perfectly. Despite inevitable setbacks, Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš succeeded in their mission. The retaliation from the Nazis was swift and brutal. The burning of Lidice and Ležáky shocked the world and served as a horrifying reminder of what the Nazis were capable of. Although many villages suffered similar fates, these two became infamous globally.

THE FINAL STAND

The story of these heroes reached its tragic conclusion on June 18, 1942. After hiding for 21 days, Gabčík, Kubiš, and five other paratroopers were cornered in the crypt of the St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral. Despite being vastly outnumbered—700 Nazi soldiers versus the seven brave resistance fighters—they fought fiercely for nearly seven hours. Ultimately, they chose to take their own lives rather than fall into the hands of the enemy. Their message remains clear: fight for what you believe in and never surrender, even in the face of overwhelming odds. Many of those who provided assistance to the resistance, including safe houses and other forms of support, were executed at Mauthausen concentration camp. Only a few survived the brutal repression.

THE LEGACY

After the war, a pardon and awards were issued by British intelligence, recognizing the heroism of those involved. As the British intelligence declared: “In a society which lives by normal rules, assassination cannot be morally justified, but when a nation is enslaved by murderers and fanatics, assassination may be the only means of destroying evil!” This tour takes you through off-the-beaten tracks that even many locals have never seen, all tailored to provide you with the full, detailed story of this incredible act of bravery.
